Development journalism is a three-unit course which is compulsory for students who specialize in print media. It is an Elective for others.

As the name implies, the focus of the course is on the relationship between development and journalism. The scope of the course covers conceptual issues such as the definition of development and its many ramifications. Theoretical issues including the popular theories of the press are also included. Practical and professional topics such as how to report development issues, public journalism and peace journalism are also included.

Typically, teaching the course involves brief introductions of the topic, followed by a classroom discussion of each topic and a brief summary. This requires that students do thorough preparation and reading of assigned materials before coming to the class. Readings for a class will be accompanied by questions which must be answered in writing and submitted at the beginning of that class. Please note that students are expected to search for and study additional materials.
